Temperature Ratings for Comfort
On nearly all good sleeping bags these days you'll find two sets of temperatures. One is the comfort zone temperature, and the other a minimum temperature.
When making a decision on which sleeping bags to buy, these figures should play an integral part in your decision. Do you intend to go camping in freezing style conditions? hot weather?. This is very important to know. Pick the incorrect setting and you will be very uncomfortable.
The comfort zone temperature is the ideal temperature to sleep in the bag. Consider the time of year you usually go camping, where you go camping, and determine what type of temperatures you are likely to encounter. Once you have set yourself a temperature, go and find your sleeping bags to match that temperature comfort zone.
If you go camping in different extremes, there may be no way around it but to buy two different sleeping bags rated differently. The best part is that you can buy one during the course of one season and you have some time before requiring the other one.
Whatever you do - get your comfort zone right. I took a winter bag out in summer once a long time ago and ended up sweating all night like a pig. It's really not fun, so be sure to get it right.
