What shape of sleeping bags should you buy?

The type of sleeping bags you are after will depend heavily on your intended use of them. Here we take a look at the different shapes available and how they suit different environments.

Tapered or Mummy Bags

Tapered bags are narrow around the foot region, and taper out as they move upwards, similar to an Egyptian mummy. Because of the design, they fit close to the body and allow for less circulation of air. These types of bags are generally fitted with a hood also which enables the trapping of heat within the confines of the bag. these bags are good for cold weather and camping where you may be exposed to the elements at night.

Rectangular Sleeping Bags

These bags are designed for comfort and not for heat retention. If you are camping in warmer weather climates where temperatures are not an issue, these can be ideal.

Semi Rectangular Bags

This is somewhat of the in-between bag. If you are camping in cooler temperatures, yet you want more room to move, then this is ideal. Just keep in mind that with these types of sleeping bags you get some good qualities of both the rectangular and Mummy bags, but you get the best of none.
